Periodontal Treatment

Periodontitis, or gum disease, is mainly a silent disease as it usually causes no pain or discomfort, and is very slow progressing, yet the destruction it causes is irreversible and is the leading cause of tooth loss.

Periodontitis is a set of inflammatory diseases affecting the periodontium, i.e., the tissues that surround and support the teeth. It involves progressive loss of the alveolar bone around the teeth, and if left untreated, can lead to the loosening and subsequent loss of teeth.

Periodontitis is caused by microorganisms that adhere to and grow on the tooth's surfaces, along with an aggressive immune response against these microorganisms. A diagnosis of periodontitis is established by inspecting the soft gum tissues around the teeth with a probe (i.e., a clinical examination) and by evaluating the patient's X-ray films to determine the amount of bone loss around the teeth.

Dr. Davis understands the importance of identifying and treating gum disease in the earliest stages, as this leads to the best outcomes.  Fortunately, early treatment is relatively simple and non-invasive.  A combination of scaling/root planing, site-specific antibiotic therapy and improved home care can result in amazing improvement of tissue health and can stop the progression of periodontitis.
